Reflections on 2024 and a Toast to a Cosmopolitan Renaissance

In the stormy December of Harare, as Zimbabwe’s vast landscapes stretch before us, my wife Chido and I reflect on the tempestuous journey of 2024—a year defined by resilience, creativity, and evolution, encapsulated in our holiday card featuring a tapir balancing a transparent egg from which a fir tree grows.

This fragile balance between life’s wildness and its regenerative power has guided us through a year marked by significant moments and transformative projects. It began with the serene winter at LABIOMISTA, where we prepared for the 60th Biennial of Venice and unveiled Looking for the Ark, a monumental work symbolizing survival and renewal, urging urgent global action.

In August we celebrated the opening of Future Garden at LABIOMISTA, a vibrant living manifesto celebrating humanity’s relationship with nature, supported by a community of scientists, artists, and young minds from The Unthinkable Experiment.

Our Cosmogolem - Giant of hope, symbol of children's rights, spread its message to new audiences through our collaboration with Aldi across Belgium. Throughout the year, exhibitions in Belgium, Italy, and Cuba, and the birth of the 29th generation of the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project in Norway, further reinforced the dialogue between biodiversity and cultural diversity.

As the year draws to a close, the tapir’s strength mirrors our own journey, balancing the fragile egg of possibility, a symbol of the delicate harmony between past, present, and future.

With a festive toast to come in 2025, we embrace the year ahead with open hearts and a shared vision for a Cosmopolitan Renaissance.

Koen, Chido & Team.
