Artist Koen Vanmechelen is featured in a unique art walking tour in Sint-Denijs City with his 3 meter large artwork ‘Salvator Globe’. A unique art experience via a 4.2 km walking tour along slow roads, with art in the vast landscape and in the seclusion of rural buildings.
Sint-Denijs-City, art alongside slow roads
A panoramic landscape, an atmosphere full of silence with slow roads crossing the village. Sint-Denijs, borough of Zwevegem, is a well-kept secret on the slopes between the rivers Leie and Schelde, near the language border. A number of art-loving villagers interrupt the calm summer and occupy the village with contemporary art, led by curator Jan Leysen.
Salvator Globe
Koen Vanmechelen is invited by curator Jan Leysen with his artwork ‘Salvator Globe’: a monumental sculpture combining a sphere, a cross and a rooster. Three very powerful and ancient symbols that merge together to form this seminal work.
Vanmechelen transforms the age-old symbol of the Salvator Globe by putting the cross outside the sphere, with the golden rooster on top. This very Christian symbol of a male God, bringer of hope, healer of sick and breaker of spells, is taken out of his normal base: the spire of a church. By turning the globe; the universal symbol of the female becomes visible, putting the masculine dominance and power into perspective. Together, sphere and rooster represent unity, completeness, infinity, communication and fertility. One cannot function as a whole without the other. The Salvator Globe depicts the whole universe, in a newly founded balance.
“Koen Vanmechelen displays a new sculpture, the Salvator Globe. It’s a mix of a globe, a cross and a golden rooster who is shouting at the future.” — curator Jan Leysen
